Why You Need To Start a Podcast In 2019

Starting a podcast with his best friend from college changed the direction of Andre’s life — and it can do the same for you.

As we all know, the way content is being created and shared has completely changed over the last few years, and this change has had a huge impact on the world of business and entrepreneurship. Podcasting is one of these new mediums that entrepreneurs are using to market their authentic self and establish credibility in the business world. It allows you to spread your message, your passions, your identity, and your opinions in unique ways with your targeted niche audience.

Because podcasting is becoming so mainstream, there has never been a better time to get started, and 19-year-old Best Selling Author Andre Haykal Jr. truly believes that every college student should launch their own podcast.

Andre and his best friend from college started a podcast called Real Talk University: Exploring Success Stories Outside of the Classroom a few months into their first semester at college, after they both came to a similar realization about the students around them: A majority of them were unaware of opportunities outside of the classroom to create wealth through financial education and monetizing their true passions. Andre and his friend Christian Bonnier envisioned a podcast where they would interview entrepreneurs who have successfully pursued their passion by taking a path outside of the classroom. As told by Andre, the goal of their podcast was to inspire their listeners to find and pursue their passions.

Going into this, Andre and Christian had absolutely no idea what they were doing. But after almost a year since they started, they have been able to put out one episode per week while also having the opportunity to interview huge names in the business world such as John Lee Dumas, Neil Patel, David Metlzer, Tim Sykes, Jeff Hoffman, Brad Lea, Guy Kawasaki Alex Morton, and many more.

Again, going into this, they had absolutely no idea what they were doing! They did not know how to get their voices out of the recording software and on to apps like Apple Podcasts. They simply recorded their first episode and figured it out on the fly. As admitted by Andre: “it was the farthest thing from a perfect debut.” Regardless, Andre says that in today’s age, the most important quality and trait of an entrepreneur is to take action, and that is exactly what they did. With all the resources to self-educate yourself, it is not hard to learn the basics of putting out a podcast. You can learn as you go, just like with anything else.

The first few episodes of Real Talk University were shaky at best. But the boys kept grinding, knowing that they had a strong purpose and that many students could benefit from their content if they could get it to where it needed to be. Very soon after, their podcast went viral. They landed on the Apple Podcast charts overnight. Andre says that they were absolutely blown away. Of course, they picked up a huge influx of new users and followers on social media as a result, and they instantly had more inspiration and stronger motives to continue down this path.

At the time this article is being written, Andre and Christian have have put out 50+ episodes of the podcast, which have been listened to thousands of times. So, why should you start your own podcast? By starting your own podcast, you are creating the opportunity for yourself to be extremely credible and relevant in whatever area of work or passion you are into. Podcasting also gives you a platform to share your voice and your message. So, what is your excuse? Everyone in college can do what Andre and Christian are doing. All it takes is passion and commitment. And of course, taking massive action.
