15.11.2006 - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded Vaisala a EUR 4.4 million contract to supply ceilometers and visibility instruments for the Federal Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) program. The contract includes several hundred instruments and an extended warranty of five years. Deliveries have started in April 2006 and will be completed in 2007. This is the second major FAA contract Vaisala has won within the past two years.

The AWOS program covers automated weather observation systems located at various airports throughout the United States. The systems measure temperature, dewpoint, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, visibility and cloud height and are owned and maintained by the FAA. The new ceilometers and visibility instruments will replace the equipment currently in use.

The Vaisala Present Weather Detector measures visibility up to 20 km, detecting also the precipitation type and intensity. The Vaisala Ceilometer is a compact laser instrument for reliable cloud base height and vertical visibility measurement. Innovative technology and proven product performance helped Vaisala secure the contract.
