From the Rolling Stones to the Beatles to Ed Sheeran, Sean Connery and Emma Watson – many personalities of distinction come from Great Britain. However, not only successful musicians and actors originate from the British Isles but also award-winning designers. They prove their know-how in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design and score with well designed works and projects.

Scoring double points
On the occasion of a limited Halloween edition of the “Angry Whopper” from Burger King, the design studio Turner Duckworth created the packaging design for the “Angriest Whopper”. It was kept in a strikingly red shade to highlight the spicy flavor of the burger. In accordance with this, Jalapeños being in flames double as angry, demonic eyes, while the lettering forms an enraged mouth. Matching with the Halloween theme, a “Whopper” was also offered with a black bun and the packaging was equipped with a skull.

In addition, the design studio also created the packaging design for the breakfast cereal “Special K” by Kellog’s. With the new visual identity, the brand wants to appeal to women who prefer to eat nutritious food rather than count calories. In line with the redesigned logo, the new packaging aims at emphasising the ingredients. Thus, the studios’ creative heads could score double points in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017 with their works and receive the coveted Red Dot even two times.

New brand design for the opening
With new restaurant openings planned, the tapas bar “Boqueria” wanted to revitalise its brand so as to establish its offer of authentic Spanish tapas and the flair of Spanish conviviality. Therefore, the Magpie Studio designed a new brand identity which was awarded with a Red Dot.

Within this identity, many things were created using food, from typography made with potato stamps to collateral printed with vegetable inks. And even the tone of voice treats the topic of food. Spanish phrases were used, which, translated into English, sound peculiar and thus attract attention.

Smart medication intake
The Red Dot awarded App “Memo Health”, developed by Tinylogics, manages the intake of medication and supplements in an intelligent, informative and interactive way. The application automatically leads the user to the upcoming intake reminder, with a speech bubble directing his or her attention to what is important. If the user has not yet taken the medication, the bubble will turn red, indicating the urgency of the intake. Optionally, the app can be integrated with a connected smart pillbox that automatically records the user’s medication intake.

Jury Session in July
24 international jury members will come together again in July 2018 and decide on the awarding of the Red Dot. They examine the works, projects and designs submitted to the Red Dot Award 2018 individually and assess them regarding their design quality and creative performance. Works with a very high design quality are awarded with a Red Dot: Best of the Best, while projects with a good design quality receive a Red Dot. Outstanding designs are honored with the Red Dot: Grand Prix. It is the highest single distinction and goes to the best work in a category. Which projects will be honored with this distinction, will be announced at the Red Dot Gala in Berlin on 26 October 2018.
