Johnson Controls employees receive STEP Ahead Award for Women in Manufacturing

Recognition highlights company’s commitment to advancement of women in the manufacturing industry

Two Johnson Controls employees were selected to receive the 2018 Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award from The Manufacturing Institute. Clare Frigo, project manager, U.S./Canada Aftermarket, and Julie Roberts, account director, IBSA, Wholesale Accounts, are being recognized for their achievements in the manufacturing industry and for exemplifying excellence in their companies. 

Women constitute one of manufacturing’s largest pools of untapped talent, with women totaling about 47 percent of the U.S. labor force in 2016, but only 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce. The STEP Ahead Awards are part of the larger STEP Ahead initiative, launched to examine and promote the role of women in the manufacturing industry through recognition, research and leadership for attracting, advancing and retaining strong female talent.

Through several ongoing initiatives launched in recent years, Johnson Controls has demonstrated a strong commitment to increasing representation, development, inclusion and advancement of women in STEM fields. For example, the company’s NEXT program (Network Educate eXpand Transform) partners with Society of Women Engineer chapters from Marquette, MSOE, UWM, and UW Madison on various networking, internship and outreach opportunities.

On April 10, The Manufacturing Institute will recognize 130 recipients of the STEP Ahead Awards at a reception in Washington, D.C. The STEP Ahead Awards program will highlight each honoree’s story, including their leadership and accomplishments in manufacturing.
