International women: ONE searches for inspirational people who have a global impact

Ahead of International Women’s Day (March 8), The ONE Campaign is asking for communities to nominate a women they know who has helped others around the world.

ONE is looking for ‘International Women’ – individuals who have given their time or expertise helping people in some of the world’s poorest countries – either by visiting the country, raising funds to help or highlighting the issues at home.

This could be a doctor or nurse who has visited a country effected by an epidemic, a teacher who has taught pupils overseas or helped those at home learn about the issues, or a charity-shop volunteer or grassroots campaigner who has given up their Saturdays for years.

Romilly Greenhill, UK Director of The ONE Campaign, said: “There are hundreds of thousands of women across the UK who’ve helped others in the world’s poorest countries, either through giving their time here to raise awareness or funds, or by going to the countries in person to give their expertise.

“We want to recognise these women by highlighting the impact they have made to people all around the world. They are the human embodiment of ‘Global Britain’”.

ONE is asking people to nominate themselves or someone they know by visiting

Of all the women nominated, five will be invited to take part in a celebration event in Parliament with their local MPs just before International Women’s Day.

Greenhill continued: “If we could we’d invite every woman whose name is put forward for their work supporting others around the world. This is a widespread movement and the five people who attend the celebration event will be there on behalf of every international woman.”
