Hulu Lands First-Ever Golden Globe Awards, Including Best Television Series – Drama For The Handmaid’s Tale

Premium Streaming Service Wins Two Awards at 75th annual Golden Globe Awards

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – WEBWIRE

On the heels of its historic Emmy Award win for Outstanding Drama Series, Hulu’s hit original series, The Handmaid’s Tale, nabbed a total of two awards at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards. The awards were announced this evening at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and mark the first-ever Golden Globe Awards for the premium streaming service.

The Handmaid’s Tale was recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with Golden Globe Awards for:

  • Best Television Series – Drama
  • Best Performance by an Actress In Television Drama – Elisabeth Moss

Hulu’s Golden Globe Award wins mark the first time a streaming service has ever taken home both the Golden Globe and Emmy® Awards in the drama series category. The awards also mark the first time in over five years that a series has taken home both the Golden Globe and Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in its debut season. Last fall, Hulu made history when The Handmaid’s Tale  became the first series on a streaming service to win a Primetime Emmy Award in the Best Series category at the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Lead Actress Elisabeth Moss and Supporting Actress Ann Dowd also landed Emmy Award wins for their critically-praised roles in the series.

“Hulu is honored and grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for recognizing the talented people, both behind and in front of the camera, who made The Handmaid’s Tale such an extraordinary series,” said Hulu CEO Randy Freer. “We congratulate MGM, Bruce Miller, Elisabeth Moss, Warren Littlefield, and the rest of The Handmaid’s Tale cast and crew who had the foresight and dedication to bring Margaret Atwood’s powerful story to life.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is an eight-time Emmy Award-winning drama series, and is currently nominated for two SAG Awards, three Critics’ Choice Awards, two WGA Awards and two PGA awards. The series was also recently honored as one of AFI’s 10 Best Drama Series of the Year.

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized “return to traditional values.” As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

The second season of The Handmaid’s Tale is set to premiere on Hulu in April 2018.
