California Company Recalls Tuna Products from Multiple States due to Salmonella Concerns

To help prevent foodborne illnesses and costly product recalls, LA Testing offers food testing services to identify Salmonella and other microbial pathogens.

South Pasadena, CA – WEBWIRE

Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a voluntary recall of tuna steaks and loins that were distributed in California and nine other states. The company behind the recall is based in California and has reported that the recalled items were sent to restaurants, retail stores and food service operations.

According to the announcement, the recall was initiated after sampling by the FDA revealed the tuna products had the potential to contain SalmonellaSalmonella is a type of bacteria that can make people sick and is frequently associated with contaminated foods and product recalls.

For many who become infected after eating contaminated foods they can expect to develop diarrhea, vomiting, fever, chills and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness typically lasts from 4 to 7 days and most people recover without treatment. For some individuals, the condition can be severe enough that they need to be hospitalized. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella causes over 1 million foodborne illnesses, with thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths annually.

“To help prevent infections and costly product recalls from occurring, proactive microbial testing of food items and surfaces in processing facilities can be instrumental,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “If contaminated products do reach consumers the result could include hospitalizations and even deaths in some cases. Damaged public relations, recall costs and expensive legal fees are all likely to follow. At LA Testing’s network of laboratories, we provide rapid PCR testing and traditional culturing methods to identify a wide range of microbial contaminants to prevent contaminated products from reaching the public and to help remove these types of risks for those in the food industry.”
