Telenor market leader in broadband telephony

(Fornebu, 9 October 2006) Telenor is now market leader in broadband telephony in Norway. “We are proud to be number one in the market,” says Berit Kjøll, Division Director in Telenor.

“When Telenor launched broadband telephony on 30 March last year, we said that we would be the market leader by the end of 2006, and now we are,” says Berit Kjøll, Division Director in Telenor.

Today, Telenor has approximately 90,000 broadband telephony customers, which according to Telenor’s calculations means it has the highest market share in the Norwegian broadband telephony market. The company accounts for approximately 50 per cent of the growth in the market, but sees that the switch from normal fixed line telephones to broadband telephony is not going as quickly as several predicted.

“The most important market change at the moment is that a fixed price for home telephones is becoming more and more widespread. The number of Telenor customers that have a subscription with free calls to other fixed line telephones has more than tripled during the summer, and increasing numbers choose fixed price subscriptions that give them lower and more predictable costs,” says Kjøll.

Telenor estimates that approximately 200,000 Norwegians have chosen one or another form of fixed price subscription, either for a fixed line telephone or broadband telephone. With this type of subscription, customers can call home telephones at a low fixed price, irrespective of the length or the number of calls.

According to a survey carried out by Research Partner for Telenor, two out of three Norwegian households say the home telephone is very important, and more than 60 per cent prefer to talk to family and friends on the home telephone.

“Following price reductions for normal fixed line telephony, the prices for broadband telephony and traditional fixed line telephones are now relatively similar. For most customers, it is therefore more important to choose the correct type of subscription based on how much they use their home telephone, rather than just switching technology,” says Berit Kjøll, who maintains that the most important thing is that the customers remain with Telenor, not whether they choose a traditional fixed line telephone, broadband telephony or a mobile phone.
