Orphaned as an infant when his father murdered his Uncle, he found himself picking cotton as a child during the depression to survive. Walter eventually became a war hero and survivor when he went down with the ship when it was torpedoed by a German U Boat. He would go on to help lead Los Angeles in its business and civic institution working tirelessly to open those institutions to minorities and women.

James P. Beran is the youngest son of Walter F. Beran. Born in 1953 in San Antonio Texas, he is a graduate of UCLA. He is a serial entrepreneur involved in a range of businesses and projects. He is also a cancer survivor.
