Jiro’s Dream

This time, he was determined to make his dream of being a pilot come true and it did.

A war is not only about conflicts between two parties. It can also be about breaking the wall that hinders your dream from becoming a reality. It’s about making the most of your life even when the circumstances make it hard. And it’s about experiencing the topsy-turvy journey of finding, losing and rediscovering true love despite the turmoil. A novel entitled Jiro’s Dream written by Philip Groves is all about these things and more.

As a young man, Jiro Shimada wants to become a fighter pilot in the Imperial Japanese Navy. But his father wouldn’t agree since his older brother is already a navy pilot. When his mother learns that Jiro might be drafted as a foot soldier, which is more dangerous, she arranged for him to be sent to America.

While immersing himself in the Japanese-American community, he fell in love with a member of the enclave. The girl was later murdered by a gang of white kids. With the murderer acquitted, Jiro returns to Japan as an angry and frustrated man.

This time, he was determined to make his dream of being a pilot come true and it did. And when he accidentally meets his girlfriend’s murderer, he was given a chance for revenge. When the war is over, he returned to America with a possibility of falling in love again.

The book has garnered positive reviews from both professional book reviewers and readers. In fact, according to a Kirkus Review, “Groves’ debut historical novel, set in mid-20th century Japan, is a well-tempered story of cultural dislocation, the ruin of war and faith in love…Lively, illuminatingly exotic and richly told tale of life during wartime.”

So, if you’re interested in reading a fiction that paints an intriguing and touching story of handling family issues, following dreams and finding true love in a conflicting time, then Jiro’s Dream is for you. Groves is more than willing to make your time worthwhile.

Moreover, the book was featured during the last BookExpo America 2015. It was held last May 27-29, 2015 at the Javits Center in New York City. Jiro’s Dream, along with other materials from the author, were displayed at LitFire Publishing’s booth throughout the whole event.
