A website has been launched offering free playable marijuana games that require players to get high on pot as they play.  One game in particular, Stoned Mario, features a command screen that prompts players to “smoke” each time they make a mistake or their character dies.

MarijuanaGames.org was launched last month with the development of 5 video games containing marijuana themes throughout.  The games are essentially parodies of classic games like Hangman and Memory, but they also mimic arcade games like Pacman and Mario.

Site owners are bracing for the type of fallout groups and organizations experience when they are associated with drinking games.  Russ Hudson developed the games and the website where they are showcased.  He also writes the site’s blog and authored a marijuana knowledge quiz that is available on the site.  According to him, there’s no reason for a negative response to the new site;

“The entire country; indeed the entire world, is rapidly making a shift in consciousness and this shift is calling for legalization of marijuana.  Unfortunately, this means that right now there is an enormous amount of political pressure on the entire marijuana culture and industries.  This isn’t right, because the concept of recreational marijuana use is one of relaxation, stress relief and spiritual grounding, so the hype and stress of activism is really the opposite of this concept.”

Hudson goes on to explain that the games are meant to have fun and relax, but also stated that his site isn’t just about marijuana video games.

“We’ve been playing marijuana games for decades; political games mostly that have caused regular everyday people to participate in the most demeaning and potentially dangerous ways in order to use this valuable plant.  But our articles and graphics are just as much a part of the site as our games.”

The games developer and webmaster pointed to the site’s review of marijuana strains and cannabis clubs, publishing of memes and images of marijuana and cannabis related facts, and a comprehensive quiz that tests the taker’s knowledge of all things related to cannabis.  Clearly, the site isn’t only about games, but it’s the games that will probably cause the most uproar when word of the site gets out.

With the end of marijuana prohibition likely - and rapidly - approaching, it’s not a surprise that sites like this will pop up.  Fortunately, unlike drinking games, marijuana games probably won’t have people causing car accidents, sexually assaulting others and getting in fights and other confrontations normally associated with drinking.  But ultimately, you can bet that there are groups out there that will have a problem with this site.
