James Nicholas, founder of Jimmy Marketing and national best-selling author, won the coveted worldwide title as Glazer-Kennedy Insider Circle Marketer of the Year, 2013, recently in Orlando, FL.

The competition involved the organization’s best and brightest members showing their best marketing campaigns and successes based on what they learned and implemented as a GKIC member.  Dave Dee, GKIC Chief Marketing Officer in a recent interview with Jimmy commented, “Fantastic!  This was one of the best Gold interviews that I’ve done. You’ve given out so much information so I recommend for the gold member or diamond member listening to this to listen to it again and take notes.  Jimmy really laid out for you here the specific steps that he took; just the steps that he took and some great ideas – the newsletter, the video, it was just tremendous!”

Nicholas was first selected as CT’s Marketer of the Month for the GKIC local chapter, and then was selected as one of the finalists before winning the title. What stood out with Nicholas was how he began transforming his business almost immediately with what he was learning as a member of GKIC and everything he implemented proved to be successful.

“This organization and its founder Dan Kennedy helped to transform my business…and my life,” shared Nicholas. Soon after Nicholas joined the organization, he spent a year traveling over 10,000 miles to 11 different cities throughout the United States seeking out the latest marketing strategies as well as learning from some of the top business and marketing coaches in the country, including GKIC founder Dan Kennedy. He also began implementing what he had learned, into his business, including several GKIC style direct mail campaigns.

During his presentation at the event, he showed how his business had been struggling with low profit margins for several years. “My challenge was that I was doing a lot of advertising, which took most of my profits, and I wasn’t getting the return that I was expecting. Basically, I wasn’t marketing my business effectively, I was doing a lot of guessing and not utilizing direct response marketing.” He began implementing marketing strategies and campaign ideas he was learning from his mentors from GKIC, and began seeing instant results. Not only that, but everything suddenly made sense to him. “Massive action brings massive results. And you don’t have to worry if you make mistakes…imperfect action is OK, as long as you are constantly marketing your business.”

Some of the campaigns he implemented over a seven-month time period were a newsletter which he had printed to go out to his current customer base and prospects. “I quickly learned from others in the organization that we have come full circle with this type of marketing. We get so bombarded with emails and e-newsletters, that they are not as effective today as actually getting one in the mail that you can hold in your hands and read.” To get his clients to buy more services as well as reactivate past clients, he began a series of direct mail campaigns. First was the “Boomerang Campaign” which was a toy plastic boomerang in a clear, plastic bag with a sales letter to get his clients to “come back” which resulted in a 742% ROI. That was followed up with a “Compass Campaign” which was a plastic toy compass mailed with a sales letter in a clear, plastic bag to help his clients “navigate their way back to Jimmy Marketing for a mobile website.” The use of a clear, plastic bag ensures the prospect sees the marketing piece compared to a traditional envelope.

Two days before the deadline for this campaign was due, he was concerned with only a 72% ROI, so he sent out an email with a subject, “2 Boston Celtic Tickets and Limo … Are you in?”  Everyone that purchased a mobile website by the promotional deadline got entered to win the limousine ride and tickets to a Boston Celtics. Suddenly, this email caused his campaign results to soar to a 535% ROI. By integrating online marketing with a fast action bonus, you can increase your ROI.  He followed these campaigns with more strategic direct mail ideas based around 3dmail pieces such as a “message in a bottle”, rubrics cubes, bank bags, antacids, and he even dressed up as a leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day to build personality into his marketing.

He also created a letter called which stimulated one of his clients to physically come into the office a few days later with a large check to pre-pay for the entire year of marketing services. This campaign resulted in a huge 13,000% ROI!  He also felt the need to thank those who were responding to his campaigns, using several strategies from handwritten Thank You Cards to gifts of Popcorn and Cookies. Each gift was centered around a clever headline, such as the popcorn gift going to people whose website just launched with a headline “Thank you for choosing Jimmy Marketing for your website, we are looking forward to making your marketing POP!”

He began personalizing his marketing strategy even further by sending personalized video books, in which when the book opens a custom video plays.  On the book, he would educate the prospect about a potential problem and how his company could provide the solution. His messages were delivered in such an unusual way, that it not only cut through the clutter, but would often times get instant results.

For example, a long-time client who had resisted redesigning his website for years couldn’t ignore “Jimmy’s Silver Platter One-Time Offer” which included a personalized video of Nicholas sipping Miller Lite, the construction company president’s favorite beer, while exhorting him to take advantage of a pre-designed site at his rock-bottom rate. The extra time of creating the video book worked as the client sent a check with the order within a week.

Sometimes the offerings were free to help start the relationship with a prospect.  For example, he created his “Ultimate Marketing Success Kit,” which educated people on how-to identify their ideal client, create their offer and perfect their message.  The kit is offered for free on Nicholas’ site, www.JimmyMarketing.com

With wanting to help educate so many people about marketing, this ultimately led to his first book, “Small Business Marketing, Your Ultimate Guide”. The book covers everything he has learned since he started his first business when he was just 15 years old, as well as what he was learning as a member of the GKIC from successful entrepreneurs all over the country. The book quickly hit #1 in multiple categories on Amazon.com. “This is the kind of business marketing guide that I wish had been around when I started my business,” says Nicholas. “I saw a need for a book like this, to help give small businesses and startups focus and direct strategies that they can implement either internally or with the help of a professional. These are all strategies that every small business owner in the 21st Century needs to be aware of.” Nicholas writes in a way that puts these overwhelming strategies into simple, plain English for today’s business owner. There are so many new businesses today, that a book like this should be an essential part of their business ‘tool kit’.

Within just one year after attending his first GKIC Super Conference, Nicholas not only transformed his business and won Marketer of the Year, but he also transformed his life. By implementing a mindset strategy he learned from Lee Milteer, Nicholas lost 70 pounds this year.  Lee focuses on mindset and leads GKIC’s Peak Performers group.
“When I attended my first GKIC Super Conference last year, I was taking so many notes … my head was swimming. I knew I needed to learn as much as I could, since so many people come to me for advice in their business and marketing; and I felt like I was there not just for myself, but for them too. I have always felt that urgency to help transform businesses and lives on a larger scale.”

Walter Bergeron, 2012 GKIC Marketer of the Year Winner and recently sold his business for over $10 million, “I am so glad Jimmy won.  His marketing is not only outrageous and amazing, but it converts! If I didn’t just sell my business, I would want him to help with my marketing.”
