Practicing Pronunciation With Kids Helps Immigrants Reduce Accent

First generation American children whose parents are from India, Asia, and Latin America, among other places, are able to assist their parents in learning English, and what’s more, they are also able to help them with American English pronunciation once they have a firm grasp on reading, writing, and comprehending English without assistance or translation.
 
In 2012, thousands of Burmese refugees came to the US as part of a political upheaval. Most parents did not speak English, so many of the schools that began teaching their children implemented programs for parents to learn alongside them. It came as no surprise that the children picked up both the language and the English pronunciation much more quickly than their parents, and were thus able to help their parents learn to speak English more fluently. Once immigrant parents enter the workforce, they are faced with challenges, including ensuring their education is applicable in the US; many have to retest or go back to school to certify themselves to practice within their profession stateside. Many will have to pass the TOEFL test.
