Last month, information about a recent survey was published that showed almost two thirds of people contacted were in favor of nutritional labeling in restaurants. In recent years, the federal government has also been involved with the push to provide consumers with more transparency with what they eat in restaurants.

In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued two proposed regulations that would ensure calorie labeling on menus and menu boards in chain restaurants, retail food establishments, and vending machines with 20 or more locations. According to the FDA’s proposal, “To implement the menu labeling provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (Affordable Care Act), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing requirements for providing certain nutrition information for standard menu items in certain chain restaurants and similar retail food establishments. The Affordable Care Act, in part, amended the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), among other things, to require restaurants and similar retail food establishments that are part of a chain with 20 or more locations doing business under the same name and offering for sale substantially the same menu items to provide calorie and other nutrition information for standard menu items, including food on display and self-service food.”

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s leading food testing laboratories, provides nutritional labeling services to food manufacturers, government agencies, restaurant chains, and the public. “Nutritional labeling provides consumers with the information they need to make smart decisions about the foods they purchase for consumption at home and when they are dining out,” stated Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL offers two methods for determining the nutritional content of food products to help restaurants provide this important information for their customers.”
