Many food products are required to carry a nutritional facts label on their packaging.  These labels have evolved over the years and provide consumers with important information about the nutritional content of the food they eat and feed their families.

EMSL Analytical, one of the leading food testing laboratories, provides nutritional labeling services to food manufacturers, government agencies and the public.  As part of a healthy diet, EMSL offers the following advice for consumers when examining nutritional labels:

  • Review the serving size and servings per container
  • Check the calories, including calories from fat
  • Limit nutrients such as fats, cholesterol and sodium
  • Look for vitamins, protein, carbohydrates and dietary fiber

“Nutritional labeling provides consumers with the information they need to make smart decisions about the foods they purchase,” stated Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL offers the two most common methods for determining the nutritional content of a food product: laboratory based analysis and database analysis.  Each method has its merits and it’s important that food manufacturers consult with one of EMSL’s experts to determine which method is right for their type of product.  Whichever method is chosen, once EMSL performs the analysis, camera ready nutritional fact panels are available.”

Laboratory based nutritional analysis methods require a physical sample of the product be sent to the laboratory. The samples are then prepped and analyzed using various scientific instruments and techniques to yield data that is specific and unique to the product.

Database analysis requires that the formula for the product, along with detailed information about each ingredient and product processing information, be submitted in writing to the laboratory. Typically, no physical sample is required.
