Listeria Detected in 70,000 More Pounds of Meat in Buona Vita

EMSL Analytical provides quality Listeria testing, in addition to other foodborne pathogens.

Buona Vita, Inc., a New Jersey based meat supplier, has announced the recall of an additional 72,510 pounds of meat due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This announcement followed their previous recall last week of over 300,000 pounds of meat products. The affected products include various frozen, ready-to-eat, meat, and poultry products.

The contamination was discovered by a third party through microbiological testing. The recalled products were produced on June 26, 2012 and were sold to distribution facilities nationwide.

There have been no reported illnesses to date; however, exposure to Listeria monocytogenes can cause a bacterial infection in the body known as Listeriosis. Listeriosis is normally not life-threatening to healthy individuals, but children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems are at a higher risk of developing a severe infection.

“EMSL Analytical provides quality food testing services for pathogens, such as Listeria monocytogenes,” states EMSL’s National Food Microbiology Supervisor, Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., R.M. (N.R.M.), C.F.S.P. “Our company headquarters, in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, is one of the nation’s leading food testing laboratories and has served the region’s food industry for years.”
