Local Small Business Marketing Turns To The Web

Advertising for a local business was pretty simple. It was enough to place an ad in the yellow pages because customers used the yellow pages almost exclusively to find local businesses. An ad in the yellow pages meant calls - and if you wanted more calls, you placed a larger ad. Unfortunately, things aren’t quite so simple anymore.

The advertising game has changed, and many small businesses are finding it harder to connect with customers. Kurt Abel of Square One Web Solutions, a Los Angeles based web marketing agency, has noted that his clients have a few things in common. “My clients want to reach out to their potential customers, but they do not know how to start. They see all of the options – email marketing, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, SEO, PPC – and their eyes glaze over. They are busy running a business, they don’t have time to learn a whole new form of communication.”

Business owners want to use the internet. Most have a web site, but have seen little to no success. This leads to frustration because of the time and money spent. Unfortunately many of these businesses then decide that internet marketing does not work and they abandon it completely.

Fortunately, some small businesses are turning to web marketing agencies. These agencies cater to small businesses, offering services that they need at prices that they can afford. Abel adds, “Our clients can’t afford to spend a lot on advertising, but we are still able to help them. We take a look at the business and offer the services that will be most effective.”

PCN, a family owned answering service in southern California, recently transitioned from advertising in the yellow pages to meeting their customers online. They are a client of Square One and now primarily use the web for advertising. Brian White, Vice President of PCN says,” We have been using Square One for the past six month and we have increased our sales calls by 300%.   We are attracting customers that we have never had access to before, even back when the yellow pages were effective. ”

While many businesses are stuck in the past, smart business owners are turning to the web. While it might not be as simple as it once was, it can be very effective. Local business owners are seemingly faced with a choice – sink with the past, or swim with web marketing.
