Outbreak of Drug-Resistant Salmonella Infections Linked to Ground Beef

As of January 5, 19 people ages 1 year old to 79 years old have been infected with Salmonella Typhimurium in Hawaii, Kentucky, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont. The infections have been linked to ground beef that has since been recalled from Hannaford Supermarkets. The supplier of the product is still unknown.
 
The strain of Salmonella responsible for the outbreak is resistant to several antibiotics, which increases the risk of hospitalization and of treatment failing.
 
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people infected with Salmonella bacteria begin to show symptoms of diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. In the majority of cases, illness only lasts for 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, in some cases, the diarrhea may be severe enough that the patient is hospitalized. If the infection spreads to the bloodstream from the intestines, the patient may die unless he or she is treated with antibiotics.
