GAITHERSBURG, MD, -- The Lockheed Martin-led [NYSE: LMT]) team has been selected by the Department of Justice to compete in the final phase of the multi-billion dollar Integrated Wireless Network (IWN) competition. During this final competitive phase, the team will prepare a design and implementation plan for an initial IWN service area covering a specific geographic region of the nation.

IWN will provide secure, interoperable nationwide wireless communications for federal law enforcement agents and officers and support multi-agency operations between the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Treasury.
“The progress that Lockheed Martin and our teammates have made toward IWN has been outstanding, and we have uniquely positioned our team to quickly provide the best capability to the more than 80,000 federal agents,” said Stan Sloane, Lockheed Martin Executive Vice President for Integrated Systems & Solutions (IS&S).

“We look forward to deploying our solution in the field and enabling users to communicate seamlessly with those who need information to protect our nation,” Gordon McElroy, vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Intelligence & Homeland Security Systems for IS&S, added.

IWN will upgrade existing stovepipe communications systems with a flexible communications infrastructure for mission-critical voice and data. It will allow mission data to reach officials in the field faster and more consistently. It will also enhance agent and officer safety through improved coverage and increased situational awareness.

IWN is jointly managed by the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Treasury. It will support more than 80,000 agents and officers responsible for law enforcement, protective services, homeland security and disaster response missions. The government plans to award an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract with a base period of five years, with two additional five-year options.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2005 sales of $37.2 billion.
