Warm and Welcoming in Unexpected Walnut — SMFD + Barcelona Wine Bar

Custom furniture and fixture maker Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design (SMFD) welcomes a bit of the Spanish coast to the South’s largest city with the opening of the newest Atlanta eatery to feature the firm’s everyday modern designs—Barcelona Wine Bar, Inman Park.

A close collaboration between owners Barcelona Restaurant Group, SMFD and Atlanta Architecture Firm Square Feet Studio, Barcelona Wine Bar combines old-world charm with modern flavors to concoct a dining experience that’s at once enveloping and open, both classic and communal.

SMFD worked with Barcelona’s owner and Square Feet Studio to create custom-made chairs, benches, tabletops, banquettes, bars, and unique patio furniture designed specifically for the eatery’s open-air dining room, choosing solid Walnut as a primary material. The wood, rich and warm with a variety of alluring tonal gradations, serves as a surprising but welcoming tone-setter, as Walnut is rarely used in commercial spaces. Laid out in string of communal tables flanked by banquettes featuring burnished metals (a reference to the building’s industrial past), the dark wood draws diners together. The aesthetic is a perfect complement to the restaurant’s exceptional wine menu, unpretentious service and small plate tapas—rustic bites designed for sharing over cross-table conversation. Refined but rough-hewn wide-plank flooring (also by SMFD) anchors the entire experience.

“There’s a patina to the finishes that make it seem like the space has been around for ages already,” says Square Feet Studio Principle John Bencich. “We also brought local talents like Skylar Morgan to the project to help complete the vision and make it uniquely Atlanta.”

Barcelona is just one of many of SMFD’s ventures in outfitting Atlanta’s coolest culinary spaces. Previous work includes major build-outs at Serpas True Food in Atlanta’s up-and-coming Old Fourth Ward, downtown sushi spot Luckie Food Lounge and West Midtown standard, Ormsby’s. Smaller projects include woodwork at West Egg Café, the historic Atkins Park Tavern, the W Hotel Midtown, Spice Market, and 246 in Decatur. “We feel exceptionally lucky to be able to help create places that have an impact on the lifestyle that is specifically Atlantan,” says SMFD’s Skylar Morgan.
