Delafield, WI: The city of Delafield hosted a successful smartphone and QR Code promotion, the first time ever in the city, during its annual Block Party celebration, July 8 and July 9 in Downtown Delafield. Over 250 participants used their smart phones to scan 1,900 QR Codes. The scanned QR Codes automatically linked festival goers to a mobile-optimized entry form to win $250 cash or displayed an instant win screen, which was redeemed on the festival grounds for a prize of Block Party food and beverage tickets. Delafield is one of the first cities in the country to use this innovative technology to promote this type of visitor interaction within its community events. QR Codes are square, two-dimensional barcodes that are scanned using a free app that utilizes the smartphone’s camera and then connect the user to online content, without having to type in a website address.

One of the instant winners, excitedly stated, “The QR Codes at the Block Party made me realize, ‘WOW, this is fun! Awesome!’”

“The QR Code promotion was more than just fun; it also accomplished its goal of encouraging visitors to move around and experience Delafield and the excellent businesses and attractions we have in our city,” said Scott Steinhorst, President, Delafield Tourism Council.

Highlights of Delafield’s QR Promotion included:
• Over 250 Block Party attendees participated by scanning QR Codes
• 1,900 total QR Code scans over the two-day Block Party
• Two Grand Prize winners were announced live on stage:
$250 Cash, Friday – Sherry S. and $250 Cash, Saturday – Jennifer G.

• 20 ‘instant win’ winners had a special screen appear on their phones after scanning codes which instructed them to report to the QR Information Booth to collect a prize of $10 food and beverage tickets.

More than 40 locations displayed unique QR Code signage including festival grounds and other Delafield ‘hot spots,’ such as the Lake Country Art Festival, hotels, city parks, attractions and restaurants. The QR Codes, each one entirely unique, were printed on signage, printed on coupons with every food/beverage ticket sold at the Block Party, and displayed on the backs of Block Party volunteer T-shirts. An information booth was set up to answer festivalgoer’s questions and assist in getting their phones ready to participate.

Held in Delafield’s Williamsburg-styled downtown, the Delafield Block Party is a Delafield Chamber of Commerce premier summer event, drawing thousands of people to the area. It features live music from four musical acts and skylight dining under the stars with menu items from local restaurants. The annual family-friendly event, which takes place every July, is free.
