The Teamcenter Gateway Links the World’s Most Widely Used PLM Solution to one of the Manufacturing Industry’s Most Widely used ERP Systems

PLANO, Texas – UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced the “SAP Certified Integration” designation has been added to the latest release of its Teamcenter® Gateway solution. UGS partner TESIS PLMware, the developer of Teamcenter Gateway, received SAP® certification for the software that links Teamcenter, the world’s most widely used PLM portfolio, to mySAP™ Business Suite solution, one of the manufacturing industry’s most widely used solutions for enterprise resource management (ERP)

“PLM and ERP systems are both required in order to adequately fulfill the IT needs of most modern design, development and manufacturing enterprises,” said Rami Sartani, CIO, ELTA Systems Group, a subsidiary of Israeli Aircraft Industries Ltd. “The latest release of Teamcenter Gateway allows us to leverage the strengths of both Teamcenter and SAP for their respective domains, eliminates the effort to keep data in sync across both systems and facilitates product-centric processes that are no longer limited by the capabilities of the individual systems.”

The collaborative link between Teamcenter PLM and mySAP ERP was developed on SAP Netweaver which is the Integration platform for Independent Software Vendors (ISV) to integrate their applications.
Analyst’s research validates benefits of PLM/ERP integration
CIMdata in its recent research report, PLM and ERP Integration: Business Efficiency and Value, identified several benefits due to the integration between PLM and ERP.

* 75 percent reduction in the time, cost and errors associated with re-keying data entry from one system to the other.
* 75 percent reduction in BOM error cost as BOMs are created once and then managed consistently in both PLM and ERP.
* 15 percent reduction in inventory costs as the result of designers and engineers knowing what parts are already on hand and incorporating them into new versions or products – improving part reuse.
* 8 percent reduction in scrap of materials that cannot be used in production and which were either already in inventory or ordered before procurement was aware of pending changes.

“PLM manages the innovation process – enabling companies to quickly create right-to-market products and to leverage part re-use,” said Ed Miller, president of CIMdata. “ERP ensures that a quality product is produced according to customer demand in a timely, cost controlled manner. By tightly integrating these two technologies, UGS is helping its customers establish an environment in which their innovative ideas can be efficiently and effectively turned into quality products that are highly desirable and marketable.”
Open solution enhances manufacturing

Comprehensive and accurate interfaces between PLM and ERP systems are critical to product quality, cost and time-to-market considerations for manufacturers worldwide. As part of its PLM Open business model, UGS has designed its Teamcenter software portfolio to work in concert with all of the industry’s leading ERP applications. The latest release of Teamcenter Gateway is a logical evolution of the Teamcenter-SAP integrations UGS has been delivering for more than 10 years.

The interface – produced in collaboration with TESIS PLMware, a long time UGS partner with leading expertise in SAP – has been extended to include greater collaborative functionality for engineering and manufacturing information as it moves from Teamcenter to mySAP Business Suite.

In the new release, the software now allows data ownership to be shared, synchronized and/or handed off between Teamcenter and mySAP Business Suite as appropriate throughout the entire product lifecycle. A newly developed component, for example, may have its part ID assigned initially in Teamcenter by engineering, while as part of the release process ERP will assign a different part ID conforming to enterprise standards. At this stage, the Teamcenter Gateway can allow the ERP generated part ID to overwrite the initial ID in Teamcenter, or the ERP ID could also be added as an attribute to the Teamcenter item. For other part attributes, such as net weight, Teamcenter can remain as the master throughout the process while still other attributes that are originating in mySAP Business Suite, such as cost or stock level, are available to the engineer in Teamcenter as runtime properties, always reflecting their actual value in mySAP Business Suite.

Best practice implementation
The Teamcenter Gateway for the mySAP Business Suite has been redesigned to include pre-configured workflows representative of best practices for using both Teamcenter and SAP. At the same time, it provides full flexibility to support the configuration of very complex process integration scenarios. Predefined workflows, handlers and data mappings facilitate accelerated implementation for all customers.

“Consistent with UGS’ ‘open by design’ strategy, Teamcenter Gateway continues to enhance Teamcenter’s ability to effectively integrate with our customers’ diverse IT environments,” said Steve Bashada, vice president of Teamcenter Applications, UGS. “Teamcenter enables companies to manage the entire product lifecycle – from requirements, to work-in-process during product development, to manufacturing planning. The Teamcenter Gateway designed for use with SAP sets a new standard for a truly seamless integration between the virtual and the physical world.”
