This Holiday season is the start of Retailers offering consumers mobile gift cards. They are offering mobile gift cards in hopes of grabbing customers’ valuable cellphone real estate.

American Eagle, working with Transaction Wireless, launched its mobile gift-card service in October and has been using an email marketing campaign and Facebook to promote the service.

This year holiday spending is on the rise acording to (NFR) the National Retail Federation, but women shoppers are more frugal than thier male counterparts. Consumers plan to spend $689 in 2010 on holiday-related shopping. 62% of shoppers say the economy will impact their spending—down from 65% last year.

The NFR says that Men are more likely to shop at department stores, and female shoppers purchase more from discount stores. Women prefer gift cards (64%), jewelry (33%) and home décor (26%). Men want consumer electronics (39.7%) or sporting goods (25.8%).
