IP Targets SOC Designs for High Definition Media Applications

HSINCHU, Taiwan, and SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 11, 2006 — Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIMG), a leader in the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high-definition content, and UMC (NYSE: UMC, TSE: 2303), a leading global semiconductor foundry, today announced an agreement to port to UMC’s 90nm process technology a High-Definition Multimedia Interface™ (HDMI™) receiver intellectual property (IP) core from Silicon Image. The agreement will enable UMC’s and Silicon Image’s mutual customers to license from Silicon Image an HDMI 1.1 receiver core that is silicon-proven on UMC’s most advanced mainstream production technology.

“Digital TV System on a Chip (SoC) designs are integrating HDMI and moving to 90nm processes,” said Eric Almgren, VP of Intellectual Property at Silicon Image. “By offering our first 90nm HDMI receiver IP core on UMC’s process, we will enable HDTV SoC companies to integrate a proven HDMI core in a leading-edge process.”

HDMI™ has quickly emerged as the standard interface for connecting high-definition (HD) components such as HDTVs, DVD players, set-top boxes, digital cameras and A/V receivers. HDMI enables the transmission of premium digital content over an uncompressed, secure digital video and audio interface via a single cable with a small, low-cost connector.
Silicon Image offers the broadest portfolio of HDMI solutions on the market, addressing a wide variety of integration options. This portfolio includes discrete HDMI transmitters and receivers, video processors with HDMI, HDMI transmitter and receiver IP cores integrating both the digital logic and analog PHY IP, and HDMI transmitter and receiver digital IP cores with a companion discrete PHY chip.

Ken Liou, director of the IP and Design Support Division at UMC, said, “Reusable IP has become increasingly important as SoC designs migrate to more complex nanometer technologies. To satisfy our customers’ increasing requirements for this IP, UMC continues to enhance its portfolio of third-party IP offered as part of our SoC foundry solutions. We are pleased to partner with Silicon Image to verify their leading HDMI cores on our 90nm technology, and look forward to offering our customers the benefits of this IP in the near future.”

UMC’s 90nm process technology is in volume production for a wide range of products that span the computer, consumer, and communications sectors. These include RF/baseband products, high-speed graphics applications, and low power SoCs for portable electronics. UMC’s 90nm technology is supported with extensive design support resources including silicon verified libraries, EDA reference design flows, and the latest design-for-manufacturing (DFM) solutions.
