Victor Rallo brings the highly anticipated and much sought after Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2008 to lovers of Italian wine on RalloWines.com. Terra di Lavoro means ‘land of labor’, an honor to the hard work that goes into its development. Galardi’s rocky vineyard soils, along the high hills of Sessa Aurunca, are extremely difficult to cultivate. The Aglianico also needs more time to ripen, sometimes staying on the vine as late as November. Premiered in 1994, this wine needs to age for one year in French oak and then rests another seven months in bottle before release. It’s an 80-20-blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso, which is of similar characteristic to the Aglianico but softer on the tannins; the grape also heightens the wine’s acidity and imparts more of the dark, wild berries on the palate. Bursting with layers of finely-grained tannins, dark fruits and chocolate on the palate with hints of tar and smoke, this wine is intense.

Galloni wrote his spectacular review of the Terra di Lavoro 2008 after tasting it for the first time on Thursday night of June 24th at a private tasting in New York City. Only 10 people attended this closed tasting: Antonio Galloni (The Wine Advocate), Dora & Arturo Celantano (Galardi), Leonardo LoCascio (Winebow), Salvatore Galati (Winebow), Beatrice DeMarco (Winebow), Silvia & Gaia Imperato (Montevetrano), Robin O’Connor (Sherry Lehman) and Victor Rallo.

Galloni wrote in his review, “Galardi’s 2008 Terra di Lavoro is a legend in the making. It is a fabulously ripe, rich and seductive wine endowed with beautifully articulated dark plums, ash, leather, licorice, all of which meld together in an explosive, utterly thrilling display of class and elegance. Clean, mineral notes frame the eternal finish. Today the 2008 is impossibly young and the wine will require considerable patience, but its class, pedigree and potential are all first-rate. Simply put, the 2008 is a monumental Terra di Lavoro. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. 97+.”
