SPI Solves Back-Reflections with New Beam Delivery Optic

WEBWIRE

SOUTHAMPTON, England -- 1/17/2005 -- Southampton Photonics, Inc. (SPI) today announced the launch of a second generation of beam collimator for its redPOWER(TM) range of CWM fiber lasers (10-100W).

The new collimator will be fitted to all lasers in the current product range sold from the start of 2005 and the higher power lasers currently in development. This unique solution is the result of extensive market research and customer trials activity throughout the second half of 2004. The beam delivery optic is the most advanced of its type, allowing reliable management of on-axis applications where highly reflective materials are processed.

New features include a fiber break detector, sophisticated thermal management and heat cut-out protection system and an improved M(2)to typical values less than 1.1. In addition, it is the smallest in its class offering many advantages to the user. The total package size is some 34% smaller than the model it replaces.

John Tinson, SPI’s Vice President of Sales, commented: “The engineering team has surpassed itself with the speed and outcome of this development. A tough specification was set at the outset of the project and they have beaten their targets in almost every area. SPI will be launching many new fiber laser products during 2005, starting with Photonics West and I’m sure our customers will welcome this feature-rich addition to the range.”

About SPI

SPI develops and manufactures state-of-the-art CW, modulated and pulsed fiber lasers, components and subsystems, with powers ranging from Ws to kWs for a variety of industrial applications, such as cutting, welding, micro-machining, materials processing, marking and printing. The advantages of fiber lasers are their superior beam quality, a greatly reduced footprint, and no maintenance - radically reducing the costs of ownership. The company’s specialty-fiber based optical design enables these compact laser modules to deliver optimum power density with high beam quality to the point of use and are the ideal replacements for the more expensive, bulky, traditional laser systems. http://www.spioptics.com
