Unum Group Leverages Symantec Software and Services to Reduce Costs, Help Ensure Compliance and e-Discovery

Cupertino, Calif.– Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Tennessee-based employee benefits provider Unum uses Symantec software and services to secure its IT infrastructure and effectively address compliance-related requirements around email retention and discovery. Symantec has helped Unum prevent a network disruption as a result of a malicious intrusion in more than five years, significantly reduce IT costs, and comply with laws and regulations governing the security of confidential business information including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Founded in 1848, Unum protects 25 million people and serves 171,000 businesses worldwide, including 42 percent of the Fortune 500. A team of 30 IT security professionals work to secure the company’s information and help ensure that its 10,000 employees do not experience any disruptions in their daily business operations. In order to effectively combat ever-evolving security threats, Unum relies on the following products and services:

* Symantec Managed Security Services: Unum outsources security monitoring and management of its network to Symantec to reduce security risk and enhance operational efficiencies. As a result, three full-time IT employees who would need to be dedicated to monitoring and managing network security have been reallocated to other tasks;
* Symantec DeepSight Threat Management System: Added on top of Symantec Managed Security Services, it provides Unum with virtual real-time information on issues related to IDS, IPS, the Web security gateway and other pieces of the IT infrastructure that help Unum identify specific threats to its environment;
* Symantec MessageLabs Hosted Email Security Solution: Unum outsources mail security to Symantec instead of devoting full-time IT staffers to monitoring the email gateway for malware intrusions and spyware;
* Symantec Enterprise Security Manager: Now part of Symantec Control Compliance Suite, Enterprise Security Manager helps Unum automate security and compliance reporting to ensure compliance.

“We’re heavily regulated in the insurance industry and must comply with a number of federal laws, industry regulations, privacy and security issues and annual Sarbanes-Oxley audits, so Symantec security software and services are critical to preventing business disruptions and automating our security and compliance reporting processes,” said Lynda Fleury, AVP and CISO, Unum. “We have been able to reallocate up to five full time employees who previously spent their days babysitting the network and email gateway to more productive tasks. That equates to as much as 80 hours of full-time employee time each month.”

Email Archiving and Discovery
In order to address compliance-related requirements around email retention and discovery, the Unum IT team was an early adopter of Symantec Enterprise Vault email archiving and discovery and content archiving solution. Prior to implementing Enterprise Vault, each email discovery request related to litigation or an internal personnel matter would require IT to spend hundreds of man-hours searching email stores for specific records. Enterprise Vault software provides archiving and search functionalities that reduced the time required for each discovery request to no more than a few hours.

“Enterprise Vault has not only helped dramatically improve the speed and accuracy of our discovery searches, it has also enabled tremendous storage costs savings,” added Fleury. “In terms of email storage, with nearly 20 terabytes today, we would have been looking at as much as 40 terabytes without the deduplication capabilities Enterprise Vault provides. Coupled with the ability to move archived records from tier-one storage to tier-three storage, the savings extend into the hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.”
