Federal Minimum Wage Increase July 24th, 2009


Workers earning the minimum wage will see a pay increase in 29 states beginning July 24th. The federal minimum wage will rise to $7.25 an hour, and all states that have a minimum wage lower than this amount will be affected.

While this minimum wage increase will be felt in many states, only 4 face new a requirement for wage postings. This is due to the last federal minimum wage posting including yearly increases for 2007, 2008, and 2009. Employers in most states will not need to do anything with their existing minimum wage postings as long as they were posted after the federal change in 2007.

Employers in Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, and New York, however, will need to update their state minimum wage postings, as these are tied to the federal rate and now have new posting requirements.
