Lineup features Y Series varieties with key agronomic, defensive traits

DES MOINES, Iowa. – Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, today introduced Plenish™ as the brand name for the high oleic soybean oil trait in the next generation of healthy soybean products from Pioneer. These products will bring more value to soybean growers in high-performing varieties and increased global competitiveness for the United States soybean industry.

The Plenish high oleic soybean oil trait will be introduced in the industry-leading lineup of Pioneer® brand soybean varieties. These varieties are on track for a limited introduction in the United States for 2010 planting, pending regulatory approval, and will be offered in a broad range of maturity groups.

“Pioneer leads the industry in the development and commercialization of soybean traits that benefit everyone from growers to consumers,” says John Muenzenberger, Pioneer business manager for specialty oils. “Developed through the Pioneer exclusive Accelerated Yield Technology (AYT™) system and launched in the Y Series product line, these soybean varieties will have the key agronomic and defensive traits growers want, including resistance to SCN, Phytophthora and SDS. Also making it attractive to growers will be the opportunity to receive a premium for producing and segregating their high oleic crop.

“Plenish brand high oleic soybean oil will provide nutritionally enhanced oil with the highest oleic content in soybeans under commercial development,” says Muenzenberger. “This meets food industry needs and consumer demand for a soy-based trans fat solution. Plenish high oleic soybean oil will provide the high stability and performance of partially hydrogenated oil that food companies need without the trans fat and with lower saturated fats.”

High oleic soybean oil also is an attractive option for food companies because of the existing production infrastructure for soybeans and soybean oil. Soybeans are grown on more acres in North America than any other oilseed crop.

Extensive testing of oil produced from soybeans in 2007 and 2008 confirmed that Plenish high oleic soybean oil contains about 80 percent oleic acid, the highest oleic content in soybeans under commercial development. The high levels of oleic acid significantly increase the stability of the oil when used in frying and food processing applications. Plenish high oleic soybean oil also will provide flexibility to be used alone or in combination with other oils to optimize cost, functionality and taste.

Testing results also show this soy-based trans fat solution has more than 20 percent less saturated fatty acid including 40 percent less palmitic acid than commodity soybean oil and 75 percent less saturated fat than palm oil, a tropical oil.

There also are bio-based industrial applications for high oleic soy oil, including its use as a renewable and environmentally friendly option to petroleum-based products in a number of industrial applications. Examples include lubricants, foam products, liners and other oleo-chemical applications.

The Plenish high oleic soybean oil trait received Canadian regulatory approval in May. Pioneer completed U.S. regulatory submissions for approval of the high oleic soybean oil trait in December 2006. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration completed its review of Plenish high oleic soybeans earlier this year and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is in the process of reviewing the trait. Regulatory submissions for the trait are planned or have been completed in key soybean importing countries around the world.
