The Cash for Clunkers bill would allow consumers driving old vehicles to receive a voucher for up to $4,500 to put towards a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. The bill would help improve environmental conditions and position the US to be less dependent on foreign oil.
According to the proposal, consumers would get a $3,500 voucher if they trade in a car that gets less than 18 mpg for a new car with mileage of at least 22 mpg. Vouchers of $4,500 would be awarded if the new car gets at least 10 mpg more than the old.

The bill recently receives an initial $1 billion in funding, only a quarter of the original $4 billion requested. The partial funding means that vouchers may only be available for a limited time.
