Verizon Wireless Applauds Cell Tax Fairness For Consumers

WEBWIRE

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless today applauded the introduction of the “Mobile Wireless Tax Fairness Act” by Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Ensign (R-NV), Gillibrand (D-NY), McCain (R-AZ), Murray (D-WA), and Menendez (D-NJ), and commended the House Judiciary Committee for scheduling a hearing on the companion bill, H.R. 1521, the “Cell Tax Fairness Act of 2009.” The legislation calls for a five-year halt on new wireless-specific taxes imposed by state or local authorities.

“Wireless customers should not be subject to unfair and discriminatory taxes. This legislation addresses that concern by providing for a ‘time out’ from allowing any more of these taxes from being added to our consumers’ bills,” said Steve Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel at Verizon Wireless. “On behalf of our 86.6 million customers, we applaud this proposed legislation and commend Senators Wyden and Snowe, and their initial Senate co-sponsors, for their important efforts to make wireless services more affordable for American consumers.”
