Singapore mobile operator to improve customer experience and reduce opex with a network upgrade undertaken by Nokia Siemens Networks

MobileOne (M1) will add Internet Protocol (IP) capabilities to its 2G network as part of a network modernization initiative. This upgrade will enable the service provider to deliver a better customer experience, roll out high speed mobile broadband services, prepare for future growth at minimal costs, and a reduced carbon footprint. The modernization will be undertaken by Nokia Siemens Networks and is expected to be complete by 2011.

The upgrade to an all IP network is an important step for M1 in its move towards Long Term Evolution (LTE), and will provide a smooth transition path to 4G.

“This network modernization is in line with our strategy to invest for the future. It will enable us to prepare for the future needs of our customers and to continue to offer them the optimal level of service that they are accustomed to. The introduction of the latest radio technology will also allow us to use and manage our energy and spectrum resources more efficiently,” said Karen Kooi, Chief Executive Officer of M1.

Nokia Siemens Networks will implement its award winning Flexi Base Station, the world’s smallest and most energy efficient radio system, which will allow the operator to minimize its capital and operating expenditure. The company will also provide network optimization and related maintenance services to ensure high network quality under a five year contract.

Christian Fredrikson, Head of APAC, Nokia Siemens Networks said: “Our collaboration with M1 goes back a long way, and includes the setting up of this very 2G network more than 13 years ago. It is a moment of great pride for us to be part of M1’s evolution, and to prepare its business for the future.”
