Alcatel achieves major milestone with O2 Germany

Barcelona, February 14, 2006 — Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that, as the result of a seamless migration process initiated in March 2005, it has successfully completed the full migration of O2 Germany’s payment platform onto Alcatel’s prepaid and post-paid convergent payment solution.

O2 is the fastest-growing mobile operator in Germany with 9.8 Mio customers. Upon completion of this migration, Alcatel’s convergent payment solution seamlessly handles a combination of 4.8 million prepaid and 5.0 million post-paid O2 Germany customers, including both 2G and 3G subscribers. The solution addresses both voice and data services. The cornerstone of Alcatel’s convergent solution is a highly flexible rating engine. Combined with Alcatel’s project management and integration skills, it allows a seamless and timely subscriber migration process without influencing service quality in any way.

This is the first major reference for Alcatel’s converged prepaid and post-paid solution in the German market, and one of its most important worldwide. It illustrates the growing momentum that Alcatel, already undisputed leader for prepaid solutions with more than 150 million prepaid subscribers enabled throughout the world, now enjoys with its leading-edge convergent payment solutions.

Jean-Charles Doineau, Service infrastructure practice leader at Ovum declared: “Developing prepaid and post-paid convergent billing systems on top of a single rating engine with solutions such as Alcatel’s is a pragmatic and simple answer to service provider needs for simplified and cost-optimized charging of differentiated service bundles.”

“Through a phased and perfectly monitored approach, Alcatel has enabled us to stay in control throughout the entire process, while seamlessly migrating our complete prepaid and post-paid customer base onto their next-generation convergent payment platform,” Karl-Wilhelm Rohrsen, chief technology officer of O2 Germany declared. “Thanks to Alcatel’s open architecture and flexible rating engine, we now benefit from the flexibility and cost-effectiveness in defining and applying customer-centric and differentiated tariff schemes. The new platform improves time to market for new mobile products. ”

“This achievement with O2 in Germany reflects a true breakthrough for Alcatel in the convergent payment space,” Marc Rouanne, chief operating officer of Alcatel’s mobile communications activities declared. “Having successfully migrated their multi-million prepaid and post-paid subscriber base onto our solution, we are convinced we’re making convergent payment a reality for O2 in Germany. This invaluable field experience, combined with a truly differentiating solution, brings a unique and competitive advantage to Alcatel.”
