Advanced medical-grade network solution helps Alexandra Hospital reduce patient waiting times for beds.

SINGAPORE, February 14, 2006 - Alexandra Hospital has become the first hospital in Asia to deploy advanced Medical-Grade Network solutions from Cisco Systems®. The hospital is collaborating with Cisco® to capitalize on the Cisco Clinical Connection Suite to overcome challenges such as bed shortages, delivery of medical information and location of patients and hospital assets. This is part of Alexandra Hospital’s aim of providing hassle-free healthcare to its patients. The solution is being implemented by Fujitsu Asia, Cisco’s healthcare channel partner in Singapore.

The Cisco Clinical Connection Suite comprises complementary components that help direct, locate, and prioritize information for mobile clinicians. Working with the industry’s leading application and medical device partners, Cisco Clinical Connection Suite helps clinicians and healthcare providers deliver significantly enhanced quality of care and services.

The first component of the Clinical Connection Suite that Alexandra Hospital has implemented introduces a “just-in-time” approach to bed management that reduces waiting times for beds and increases efficiency in the utilization of beds.

“It is our aim to get a patient who needs admission into a hospital bed within minutes rather than making him or her wait for hours. We are fortunate to have Cisco Systems and Fujitsu Asia Private Limited onboard to share and work towards our vision to create a ’hassle-free hospital’. This partnership marks our first step to make healthcare better, faster, cheaper and safer for our patients. Going forward, we will work to enable our doctors and other healthcare professionals to diagnose, treat and advice our patients within the shortest time at the lowest possible cost. This is in line with Cisco’s Connected Health which takes advantage of a powerful converged communications platform to connect healthcare providers to patients and their families,” said Mr. Liak Teng Lit, Chief Executive Officer of Alexandra Hospital.

“Hospitals and medical institutions throughout Asia are facing increasing pressure to raise the quality of healthcare with limited resources. Before Cisco introduced the Clinical Connection Suite, IT solutions did not adequately address this need to improve the clinical workflow. Cisco’s solutions will help improve the way patients are diagnosed, monitored and treated,” said Craig Gledhill, Managing Director, Singapore and Brunei for Cisco Systems. “Alexandra Hospital now has the ability to take its patient care capabilities to a whole new level, which is great news for its patients and for the hospital.”

This project spans across the local-area network (LAN) and wireless LAN infrastructures, integrating Internet Protocol (IP) telephony and healthcare applications. As the systems integrator, Fujitsu has been working closely with the hospital staff to implement Cisco’s Clinical Solution Suite over the IP telephony and wireless network.

Mr Chng Teo-Hye, Regional Senior Vice President of Fujitsu Asia said, “As one of the industry leaders in systems/platform integration, Fujitsu is well placed to help Alexandra Hospital attain efficiency in its healthcare services. We are delighted to partner with Cisco Systems to provide the robust communications platform to deliver the results that will benefit Alexandra Hospital, its patients and their families.”

The partners will next look into introducing other components in the Cisco Clinical Connection Suite - including Nurse Call, Patient Monitoring, Location-Based Services and Collaborative Care - for enhanced and more responsive patient care.
