Consultant Plastic Surgeon conducts breast reduction surgery in programme

Consultant plastic surgeon at Spire Clare Park Hospital, Mr Adam Topping featured last week (28 April) on Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies programme, where he conducted breast reduction surgery on a young lady with severe back pain due to her large breasts.

Sherri Razavi, 18, from Brighton met resident GP, Dr Pixie McKenna to discuss the back pain she has been experiencing due to her 30JJ breast size. Following Dr Pixie’s advice, Sherri visited Mr Adam Topping at Spire Clare Park Hospital in Farnham, Surrey where he performed a breast reduction on her.

“Due to the sheer weight of the breast tissue that she was carrying round, Sherri was putting enormous pressure on her spine and her posture was being affected,” says Mr Adam Topping. “Some women develop disproportionately large breasts during puberty, and Sherri’s pain in her back had become so severe that she knew that something needed to be done.”

Breast reduction surgery is a common procedure. According to the Times newspaper , over 3,500 people opted for breast reduction surgery last year. The surgery involves incisions around the nipple and under the breast line. Excess tissue is removed from the breast and the nipple and areola is repositioned higher up the breast. This is a complex surgery and can take up to four hours to complete.

Sherri’s story was featured on Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies series on the 29th April 2009.
