Barcelona, February 13, 2006 — Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) has chosen the 3GSM World Congress 2006 to highlight its field proven range of advanced Evolium® GSM/EDGE radio solutions, driving toward the next billions Internet and voice subscribers in fast growing markets.

Alcatel’s Evolium® radio solutions have been developed from the outset to adapt to the constantly changing realities of cellular networks. Today Alcatel is delivering, via its permanent reengineering strategy, a product portfolio optimized towards open, modular, scalable and cost-effective IT-based platforms.

Alcatel provides operators with the weapons to face massive growth in traffic and demand, especially in emerging markets, where the next billions voice and Internet subscribers are located, and where there is an acute need for low-Average Revenue per User (ARPU) services, high-speed Internet access, as well as music and video services.

Using the latest IT-based technologies, Alcatel has enhanced the entire range of its Evolium® GSM/EDGE modules to meet the needs of operators in emerging markets for increased capacity and extended coverage together with compactness and minimum Total Cost of Ownership.

Alcatel’s new Twin TRX radio transceiver doubles the capacity of existing equipment, while occupying the same space in the rack. Scheduled for release in 2006, the new Twin TRX is particularly adapted for densely populated urban areas, with a maximum capacity of 24 TRX per Base Station cabinet.

Twin TRX transceivers can be installed in the full range of Alcatel’s indoor and outdoor BTS. As an example, inside the Compact BTS Outdoor, a small and light outdoor BTS that can be mounted on a pole high off the ground, the Twin will offer a BTS capacity of 6TRX. Its design eliminates the need for site enclosures, providing cheaper installation, and can be powered by a solar panel, for full autonomy. Well adapted for low-ARPU areas, this solution is equally attractive for other markets.

Alcatel’s Twin TRX can also be used in a different configuration to extend cell coverage for areas with low-density populations. The 2 TRX of the Twin TRX can be combined and offer an unmatched Very High output power of 110 W. Combined with the software activated feature called 4Receive Diversity (4RxDiv), the solution offers a very large cell radius boosting both the downlink and the uplink paths.

Alcatel’s Base Station Controller (BSC) has similarly been redesigned for increased capacity and flexibility, while retaining a small footprint and providing full readiness to IP transport. The new Evolium® BSC/MFS Evolution includes BSC and MFS (Packet Control Unit) capabilities in a single rack and integrates IT-based AdvancedTCA™ technology.

In addition to its high capacity of up to 2,000 TRX in one rack, the new AdvancedTCA platform in the BSC/MFS allows drastic OPEX reduction due to its compactness, its easy Operation & Maintenance and its simplified architecture with only 6 different hardware modules.

With AdvancedTCA, the new BSC/MFS leverages an architecture spanning the Alcatel portfolio of fixed and mobile products and is strengthened by the re-use capability of hardware and software modules across products.

Michael Thelander, Principal Analyst at Signals Research Group, LLC commented, “Alcatel is a leader in the industry when it comes to driving down costs and introducing cutting-edge technologies into its Evolium product line. Now, it is combining that engineering expertise with its focus and long-term commitment on emerging markets where it has always been the leading supplier in the industry. He further added, ”thanks to Alcatel, operators can now take advantage of the highest-capacity, lowest-footprint solution in the industry to un-tap the next wave of mobile subscribers"

“Alcatel’s Evolium® solutions are designed to provide critical support for mobile operators, enabling them to increase capacity and bandwidth while keeping network costs under control. Our innovative Evolium® access solutions offer superior cost-effectiveness with no compromise on reliability or functionality,” stated Marc Rouanne, chief operating officer of Alcatel’s mobile communications activities. “Highly flexible, they are well adapted for low ARPU urban and sub-urban extension, doubling the base station capacity while ensuring the lowest cost per subscriber. They can help operators bringing telecom services to remote villages and communities with 30% fewer sites at a lower network cost. ”

Alcatel Evolium® solutions are shown on the Alcatel booth at 3GSM 2006 (Hall 8 – Booth A09).
