Social Bookmarking: Social Isn’t Optional!

SAN FRANCISCO, Ca. FEBRUARY 12, 2005 – Gnolia Systems, LLC, a San Francisco-based technology company developing a new social bookmarking service, has enhanced the community elements of Ma.gnolia.com based on the strong response to social features during the site’s private beta.

Ma.gnolia began its private beta in early January, introducing select members to the fundamentals of the bookmarking and tagging service. Shortly after the first beta cycle, Ma.gnolia introduced the ability to create contacts, send bookmark recommendations and join groups with similar online interests. Upon launching these community-based features, Ma.gnolia beta members immediately began responding to social bookmarking in way unseen previously both on Ma.gnolia and current social bookmarking sites. As a response, the Ma.gnolia team enhanced the social features of the site prior to launch.

Larry Halff, Ma.gnolia founder, wasn’t surprised. “It seemed so obvious,” said Halff, “that with the proliferation of successful community destinations on the Internet and the interest of social bookmarking participants not only in marking and finding sites but also in confirming the value of the site by seeing whom and how many people are recommending it, features that facilitated this would be embraced by members. Nonetheless, the response to these features in beta has been overwhelming.”

Said Todd Sieling, Ma.gnolia’s Product Manager, “At first, some of us were very surprised by the way our beta members, many of whom have used social bookmarking tools before, were responding to the most basic elements of the experience being actually social. In a matter of days we had over 50 groups, and we’ve now passed 80 and counting. On the other hand, we’ve always maintained that the community element was largely missing from most, if not all, social bookmarking services. We were excited to see people in the beta pick up those features and run with them.”

Ma.gnolia is currently being beta-tested by a smart and supportive community of over 3000 enthusiasts and novices alike, with a launch date of February 15th. Readers interested in being among the first to hear about Ma.gnolia’s launch and to experience the most social of social bookmarking services, please visit Ma.gnolia.com.
