Sweden’s national rail administration Banverket relies on innovations from Alcatel-Lucent to help ensure the safety and smooth operation of rail traffic

Paris – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that the Swedish Rail Administration, Banverket, is leveraging technology from Alcatel-Lucent to ensure the safe and smooth operation of its nationwide rail network by migrating its mission-critical voice, video and data traffic from various legacy networks onto a single, converged high-speed broadband network.

Banverket is leveraging the newest release of Alcatel-Lucent’s Service Aggregation Router to efficiently and securely move its communications traffic, including signaling traffic for the trains, onto a converged IP/MPLS backbone, which will be easier and more cost effective to manage than the multiple networks the system now uses. The network is in operation now and is expected to be completed by 2011.

Expanding its existing Alcatel-Lucent-powered IP/MPLS network, which was awarded in December 2007, this new functionality includes an end-to-end Synchronous Ethernet capability that enables Banverket to ensure that its data - including its mission-critical GSM-R (Group System Mobile-Rail) and signaling traffic - is seamlessly and securely communicated.

“The ability to progressively and efficiently migrate all traffic from several legacy data and voice networks to a single, more efficient network will help us offer the citizens of Sweden an even more efficient and safe railroad network,” said Bengt Vidin, deputy head of operations for Banverket. “The performance of the Alcatel-Lucent Service Aggregation Router exceeded our expectations for robust and accurate Ethernet synchronization, which is essential for all of our safety critical network communications.”

The broadband network is at the heart of Banverket’s efforts to ensure safe, efficient rail transportation throughout Sweden, as this network is critical to controlling the direction and speed of trains. Critical signaling information is communicated across the network ensuring the safety of passengers and resources. Meeting the stringent synchronization and time requirements is crucial to the reliable operation of rail traffic in Sweden.

“We understood how seriously Banverket takes the safety and efficiency of its operations for the people of Sweden, and the addition of our Service Aggregation router to the Banverket network reflects a deepening of our relationship with one of our most valuable and largest customers in Sweden,” said Robert Malm, Alcatel-Lucent’s Country Senior Officer in Sweden.

About Alcatel-Lucent’s 7705 Service Aggregation Router and the solution for Banverket
The availability of the 7705 SAR with Synchronous Ethernet is a major breakthrough for operators who want to converge their networks onto a pure Ethernet structure. The 7705 SAR, which meets and exceeds performance targets for SDH/SONET and new ITU-T recommendations, is part of an award-winning portfolio of IP/MPLS equipment. The complete Alcatel-Lucent solution for Banverket includes the 7750 Service Router (SR) and the 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS) for non-stop routing and carrier Ethernet services respectively. The Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) and the 5650 Control Plane Assurance Manager (CPAM) provides end to end management over an IP/MPLS infrastructure.

The 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR) adds carrier-class Ethernet reliability and scalability to the Banverket all-IP 10-gigabit national network. The decision to expand the network using the 7705 SAR was made following rigorous testing in March 2009 that was considered “outstanding” by top evaluators from Banverket. Testing included end-to-end synchronization measurements, alternate routing and redundancy scenarios and pushing the equipment beyond the synchronization specifications to prove compliance.
