Swissport International named best global ground handler for the ninth year in succession

Zurich, Swissport International has been named Global Ground Handling Services Company for 2009 by UK’s Institute of Transport Management (ITM). This is the ninth year in a row that Swissport, the world’s leading provider of ground services to the aviation sector, has earned the prestigious ITM award.

Once again, ITM, the independent UK-based market research institute for the transport sector, has conducted more than 500 interviews and extensive industry research to determine the winners of its annual distinctions in the various award categories. Airports, airlines, passengers and suppliers were among the questionees.

Competing against a large number of major international airport service providers, Swissport was by no means assured of securing ITM’s “best ground handler” crown for a ninth consecutive year. And with business volumes declining throughout the aviation sector in response to the recent economic downturn, the Zurich Glattbrugg-based company is particularly pleased to have retained this prestigious distinction.

“I am delighted that we have again been named the world’s number-one ground handler,” says Per Utnegaard, President & CEO of Swissport International. “And I’m particularly pleased for our 33 000 employees all over the globe, who fully deserve this honour. After all, it takes very special people to remain as flexible and reliable as possible for 24 hours a day, every day of the year and in every conceivable weather.”

“At the same time,” Utnegaard continues, “we view this latest award as a further challenge to maintain our present high standards, and as a commitment to continue to provide our airline clients and their customers with optimum service quality on fair and attractive terms.”

Swissport International Ltd., which is owned by Ferrovial, a leading European infrastructure and service corporation based in Spain, provides ground services for over 70 million passengers and 3.5 million tonnes of cargo a year on behalf of some 650 client companies. With its workforce of around 33 000 personnel, Swissport is active at 178 airports in 40 countries on five continents, and generated consolidated operating revenue of CHF 1.9 billion (EUR 1.2 billion or USD 1.7 billion) last year. www.swissport.com / www.ferrovial.com
