Unisys and City of Minneapolis Relationship Wins Top Outsourcing Excellence Award

Through continual technology innovations, city has expanded services to citizens while saving taxpayers millions

BLUE BELL, Pa. – Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) and the City of Minneapolis today announced that their outsourcing relationship has received the Outsourcing Center’s “Best Partnership” award. This is the highest honor that Outsourcing Center bestows as part of its annual Outsourcing Excellence Awards program.

Unisys has managed the city’s entire information technology (IT) infrastructure – from server computers to the network to mobile PCs in police cars and much more – since 2003. According to the city, this outsourcing relationship has enabled it to save more than $18 million while expanding the services it provides to the citizens of Minneapolis.

Unisys provides IT management and support services for approximately 4,500 City of Minneapolis employees, fielding an average of 1,600 service desk calls and 160 equipment installs, moves, adds and changes (IMACs) per month. Unisys manages more than 210 server computers and 4,400 e-mailboxes for the city, along with more than 330 network devices, 3,650 desktop devices and 1,100 printers.

By taking over management of day-to-day IT operations, Unisys has freed the city’s IT organization to concentrate on strategic initiatives that benefit the entire community. For example, the city has implemented a state-of-the-art computer-aided dispatch system for emergency responders, as well as a 311 center to handle requests for non-emergency municipal services. Unisys manages the IT infrastructure for both of these crucial services.

In addition, the city has established itself as a pioneer in wireless infrastructure, with a network covering all of its 59 square miles. With assistance and ongoing infrastructure management from Unisys, the city has installed a safety camera system that it cites as contributing to a 44 percent reduction in robberies, a 17 percent decrease in car thefts, and $6 million savings in court costs.

Also, the city and Unisys outfitted a fleet of emergency command vans for wireless field communications. Those vehicles enabled the city to respond within minutes and to direct rescue operations in the field during the I-35W bridge collapse in August 2007. Similarly, Unisys has worked with the city to deploy mobile laptops in Minneapolis police vehicles and to provide similar systems to the city’s health and building inspectors.

This 2009 award is the second Outsourcing Excellence Awards recognition that Unisys and the City of Minneapolis have received. In 2004, the relationship was recognized with Outsourcing Center’s “Best First Steps” award.
