“Green” Initiatives Help Verizon Wireless And Its Customers Be More Earth-Friendly

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Every day is an opportunity for Verizon Wireless employees and customers to be more “green.” That’s because Verizon Wireless’ innovative environmental practices help reduce energy usage and increase efficiency in stores and offices and help customers conserve the Earth’s resources by reducing paper usage and keeping old cell phones and batteries out of landfills.

Energy-Efficient Communications Stores
Thirty Verizon Wireless Communications Stores have been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and awarded the ENERGY STAR®, the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection. Learn more at http://news.vzw.com/news/2009/04/pr2009-04-02a.html. Verizon Wireless is committed to energy-efficient stores, installing equipment such as temperature sensors and energy management systems to monitor heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system use; controlling temperature set-points as well as internal and external lighting schedules; and tracking data usage history for maintenance and service requirements. The systems help Verizon Wireless save on energy costs by activating the ventilating, heating and lighting systems automatically based on the stores’ operating hours.

Energy Saving Technology
To help decrease operating costs, emissions and energy usage, Verizon Wireless utilizes energy-saving technology on company desktops to ensure all PCs can be patched immediately and to reduce the power consumed by PCs. Verizon Wireless also uses “thin client” solutions – virtual technology that provides users access to centrally-stored programs and software. More than 19,000 thin clients have been deployed to date in 24 company call centers. Thin clients require less power and generate less heat than full workstations, so the company enjoys the benefits of powering a more compact unit, while also saving on cooling costs. Cell Phone and Battery Recycling
Verizon Wireless’ exclusive HopeLine® phone recycling and refurbishing program prevents old wireless phones in any condition from any manufacturer from going into landfills. Proceeds from the sale of refurbished phones are used to provide wireless phones to domestic violence victims and the non-profit organizations that promote domestic violence awareness and prevention. Since October 2001, more than 1 million phones have been properly disposed of in an environmentally sound way and more than 200 tons of electronics waste have been kept out of landfills.

Verizon Wireless also collects spent rechargeable batteries for recycling. Since 2007, Verizon Wireless has recycled more than 42,000 pounds of batteries through the Call2Recycle™ program. To learn how to donate phones, accessories or batteries, visit www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
