Symantec Announces New Consumer Security Service

WEBWIRE

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Feb 7, 2006 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced it is developing a next generation consumer security service for Windows Vista and Windows XP. Code-named Genesis and scheduled for release in the fall, the new service is a streamlined security solution designed to provide continuous, up-to-date protection. Genesis will seamlessly integrate Norton’s best-of-breed, market leading security and PC tuneup technologies; incorporate online backup, and introduce innovative patent-pending technology for protection from the new-class of Internet threats: crimeware, phishing scams and fraudulent websites.

Symantec’s new service will provide consumers with the freedom to enjoy their favorite online activities with confidence that they are secure. Consumers can expect this single, comprehensive solution to meet their computing needs with a simple interface and keep them safe in the following areas:

Security for online shopping and banking
Using its new patent-pending technology, Genesis will provide protection against the emerging dangers of crimeware, phishing scams and fraudulent websites designed to steal personal and financial information. This unique type of protection will restore consumer confidence in online banking and shopping by employing zero-hour threat technology acquired from Whole Security, Inc. Zero-hour threat protection provides an additional layer of non-signature, behavior-based security specifically looking for malicious code designed to steal personal information.

Continuous system protection for Web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging
Using proven antispyware, antivirus, firewall and intrusion prevention technology from the market leading Norton line of products, the Genesis service will protect computer systems against viruses, worms, spyware and all major types of security threats by staying continuously and quietly updated in the background.

Protection of valued photos and important files via online backup
Genesis will protect personal data from loss by automatically backing up valued digital content. Family photos, financial statements and other important documents could be identified by category to be routinely and automatically backed up by Genesis to an online site.

Tuned for optimum PC performance
Based on Symantec’s 20-year history of creating market-leading tools such as Norton Utilities and Norton SystemWorks, Genesis will automatically keep computer systems tuned-up and operating well, by running essential optimization and clean-up features in the background on a regular basis.

“Online threats to consumers have expanded from wide-spread nuisance viruses to targeted attacks designed to steal personal confidential information,” said Enrique Salem, senior vice president, products and solutions, Symantec Corp. “Not only is the nature of threats changing, but so are consumers. They want a single easy solution that will run in the background and give them the confidence that their favorite data is safely stored, their online transactions are confidential and their PC is tuned for performance. Genesis is the only product a consumer needs.”

Availability
Genesis is scheduled to be available to consumers this fall under the Norton brand for both the Windows XP and Windows Vista platforms. The price of the service will be available at the time of product delivery. An ongoing subscription fee will cover all updates and a designated amount of online storage for backup.
