Commission finds significant failings at Stafford hospital

Emma Holt, an expert medical negligence solicitor at Manchester law firm Pannone has added her voice to concerns raised about standards at Stafford General Hospital. Ms Holt, who is Head of Clinical Negligence at Pannone commented, “We have recently had a number of cases concerning Stafford General Hospital. The news that the Hospital Trust has been heavily criticised by the Healthcare Commission sadly comes as no surprise to us.”

The Commission found significant failings in emergency care, leadership and management at Mid Staffordshire Hospital which may have led to the deaths of a number of patients.

The investigation into the care provided at the hospital was initiated in May 2008 following a number of complaints brought by local people who were concerned about the standard of care provided at the hospital and statistics which demonstrated a high death rate beyond the national average.

The report highlighted deficiencies at virtually every stage in the care of patients admitted as emergencies. The report concluded that between 400 – 1,200 people more people died than would be expected at the hospitals over a three year period from 2005 to 2008.

Once of the most shocking things to come out the report was the suggestion the Trust Board put the goal of obtaining Foundation Trust status above ensuring patient safety and care.

Commented Emma Holt, “Whilst the news about Stafford is of great concern, former patients should not panic, but if they do have concerns over the care and treatment they or their relatives received, they should seek advice. There is a timescale of three years from the negligence occurring in which to bring a claim.”
