SC Johnson responds to concerns over warning labels on its Windex® Glass Cleaner

WEBWIRE

RACINE, Wis. – SC Johnson is aware that a small number of local news channels recently aired a story that features Consumer Reports claiming that people are getting sick from ingesting glass cleaners, and also criticizing the placement of warning labels on the inside of Windex® Glass Cleaner products. We would like to correct some misperceptions that they story may create.

Windex® Glass Cleaner does contain a warning label on the inside of the product that states “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS”. That is not a legal requirement, but rather a warning we provide because we believe it is the right thing to do. As a general rule, children should be kept away from household cleaning products and this statement reinforces that message. Windex® Glass Cleaner is formulated in such a way as to avoid any serious adverse consequences from ingestion or other exposures. That is why the Federal Hazardous Substances Act does not require any warnings of adverse health consequences on the label. Additionally the safety evaluations that SC Johnson performs take into consideration how products are used in the home, the most up-to-date safety information on the products and ingredients, and established safe exposure guidelines.

Lastly it is important to realize that the warning statement is placed on the back of the label because the product is clear, and the label can be read through the bottle.

As a family company, nothing is more important to us than the wellbeing of the families who use SC Johnson products. That’s why it is so important for us to set the record straight, that when used according to label directions, consumers can continue to use Windex® and all SC Johnson products with confidence.
