Motorola Completes Upgrade to TETRA Digital Radio System for Hong Kong International Airport

The deployment in record time demonstrates Motorola’s committment to delivering on mission critical communication solutions to the aviation sector

HONG KONG – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today the completion of the TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) digital radio communication system for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world. Motorola migrated the airport’s analogue system to a new digital TETRA system in only seven months, demonstrating the company’s leading position in supplying and implementing sophisticated TETRA systems for airports in Hong Kong and worldwide.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) selected Motorola as the solutions provider to replace HKIA’s analogue two-way radio system with Motorola’s Dimetra IP system in early 2008. The enhanced IP-based TETRA solution is a highly dependable, secure and scalable platform that supports voice, messaging, and mobile applications over a single network. The system upgrade improves network coverage and voice quality, enhances user experience, and enables new data applications for airport operations.

Motorola has installed three Dimetra IP base station sites and eight dispatch consoles to cover the entire airport. The new TETRA system supports mission critical communications for various user groups in normal day-to-day operations such as security, maintenance, baggage and other ground handling services. Its interoperability also allows seamless communication among different user groups, providing efficient and reliable radio communication especially in emergency situations.

More than 80 airports around the world have deployed Motorola’s radio solutions to support mission critical communications.
