Lucent Technologies Enhances VIVO’s 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Network in Brazil
Lucent to supply additional equipment and services and work with suppliers Riverstone Networks and Juniper Networks to deploy data networking solutions that enable VIVO to support growing customer demand for high-speed broadband mobile services
Wednesday February 01, 2006, Săo Paulo, Brazil – Lucent Technologies today announced a contract with VIVO, the largest mobile operator in the Southern Hemisphere, to expand and enhance the operator’s third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network. Lucent will provide additional infrastructure equipment and services and also work with its suppliers Riverstone Networks and Juniper Networks to deliver a core Internet Protocol (IP)/Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network that will enable VIVO to efficiently manage large increases in network traffic as VIVO expands its network to serve additional customers in Săo Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
“The solution presented by our partners - Lucent, Riverstone and Juniper – will provide us with the ideal features to keep the network’s performance highly reliable, thus ensuring the high availability of the advanced services VIVO Play 3G delivers to our subscribers,” said Roberto Lima, VIVO’s President. “This solution will allow VIVO to more efficiently and cost-effectively deliver mobile broadband services – such as high-speed downloads of videos, pictures, music and 3-D games – as well as corporate services such as e-mail and Internet access, and remote monitoring functionalities through video-streaming and location–based services.”
As part of the agreement, Lucent is upgrading more of VIVO’s existing Lucent-supplied base stations to support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and also providing new Modular Cell 4.0 and 4.0B base stations. Lucent Worldwide Services is providing network integration and installation services. Riverstone Networks is providing the Ethernet infrastructure, supporting the “backhauling” of data traffic from VIVO’s 3G base stations to expand the delivery of IP/Ethernet services over metropolitan access networks, Riverstone’s RS routers combine the efficiency of Ethernet with the reliability, scalability and QoS of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) to deliver high-performance Ethernet routing capabilities, resource optimization and easy migration from legacy networks.
Juniper Networks is supplying M-series multiservice routing platforms, which will aggregate traffic from multiple base stations. Juniper Networks M-series deliver a comprehensive portfolio of advanced features that combine best-in-class IP/MPLS capabilities with unmatched reliability, performance and scalability, and are designed to support demanding IP-based applications such as VoIP, video delivery and other critical services.
“This new contract highlights VIVO’s groundbreaking role in the Brazilian market as a leader in the introduction of unique applications that meet its subscribers’ demands for more and more advanced mobile services,” said Wagner Ferreira, Lucent Technologies Brazil, President. “This agreement also consolidates Lucent’s leadership on providing CDMA-based services and platforms, as well as their evolution in the Brazilian market,” he added.
About VIVO Play 3G
VIVO Play 3G, the third generation service newly released by VIVO, allows users to download and stream videos, music and images with high data transmission rates. It also offers 3-D Games, a game category available due to the outstanding performance of the mobile phone and of the network, providing the user with a great experience. Through this service, the carrier’s customer has access to all entertainment, information and multimedia content, which are divided into categories: TV, news, cartoons, music videos, movie trailers, music, etc., through the CDMA 3G EV-DO mobile phone released by VIVO in July last year.
For enterprise clients, VIVO’s EV-DO broadband mobile services provide access to e-mail, Internet, and remote monitoring functionalities through video-streaming, and location services that allow the corporate subscriber to get directions to destinations such as restaurants and offices. The same performance is also achieved on VPNs - Virtual Private Networks - which allow corporate users to access VIVO’s high-speed mobile services in all locations served by the technology, expanding their LAN –(Local Area Network)via PCs using PCMCIA EV-DO cards. This allows corporate users to work from any location as if they were in their offices, taking advantage of the same speed, security, authentication and data protection.
For the areas where 1xEV-DO services are not available, subscribers will be able to access VIVO’s 1X network through the same terminals. This is possible due to the full compatibility of these technologies.
