Siemens Supplies Turbine and Electrical Equipment for New Progroup Facility

Energy-efficient Turnkey Solution for Multiple-motor Drive with Highest Power Density in the World

Erlangen, Progroup AG, Offenbach a.d.Q., Germany, has awarded Siemens a contract to fit out its new production facility of base paper for corrugated cardboard with power-engineering and electrical equipment. With an annual capacity of 650,000 metric tons, the paper production line is being built in Eisenhüttenstadt in the German state of Brandenburg and will be operated by Propapier PM2 GmbH & Co KG, a Progroup subsidiary. Siemens is supplying the electrical equipment, based on the Sipaper solution platform, including a multiple-motor drive with the world’s highest power density yet realized in low-voltage technology. A new heating and power station is also part of the project and is to be used to generate energy for the paper factory from paper residues. Siemens is to supply the SST-300 steam turbine and the electrical equipment for the heating and power station. The value of the contract is in the double-digit million euro range and the project is scheduled for completion in October 2010.

With the paper factory Propapier GmbH in Burg in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt, Progroup AG already operates a facility in Germany for the production of base paper for corrugated cardboard. With the new factory, the capacity of Progroup will rise to around one million metric tons per year. In Eisenhüttenstadt, corrugated material and test liners with grammages of 70 to 110 grams per square meter will be produced from waste paper. The new PM2 paper machine has a working width of eleven meters and is designed for a production speed of 1,900 meters per minute. The project entails some exacting requirements in respect of the drive and control technology to be used. For example, the tambour will have a diameter of five meters and will weigh 160 metric tons.

For the paper line, the Industry Solutions Division of Siemens is supplying electrical equipment based on the Sipaper platform, which was specially developed for pulp and paper factories. The scope of supply includes a multple-motor drive with a total installed power of 30 megawatts and individual outputs of up to 3.6 megawatts. The multiple-motor drive has the highest power density that has ever been provided on the basis of low-voltage technology. This is made possible by the newly developed “Power Infeed TM” method. This concept enables large amounts of energy to be fed in at reduced investment costs and overall power consumption, while ensuring a higher degree of availability. The scope of supply also includes energy-saving motors, Geafol transformers, new low-voltage switchgear of the type Sivacon S8 as well as 20-kilovolt and 6-kilovolt medium-voltage switchgear. The integrated overall concept will ensure maximum energy efficiency, availability and safety at work.

For the new paper factory’s power supply, Propower GmbH, a subsidiary of Progroup, is building a new power station that can be operated with coal as well as residual material from waste paper processing and other substitute fuels. The power station will have a heating output of 150 megawatts and, after completion, will be operated by EnBW to supply the paper machine with all of the steam it needs and most of its electric power. Power will be generated with the help of a 25-megawatt steam turbine of the type SST-300, which is being supplied by the Siemens Energy Sector. The industrial steam turbine, which is worth over eight million euros, is being made in Brno in the Czech Republic and will be delivered in 2010. The electrical equipment for the power station, including the medium and low-voltage switchgear as well as all the installation work, completes the Siemens scope of supply for this contract.
