Paris - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced today it has successfully deployed a 3G+ network for the mobile operator SRR. The first phase of this UMTS/HSPA wireless network deployment was made in 2008 mostly in Réunion’s Saint-Denis commune and in the island’s main towns.

Alcatel-Lucent’s UMTS Radio Access Network (UTRAN) and mobile NGN (Next Generation Network)core network solutions allow SRR in Réunion to gradually extend its voice and data services offered to its customers and tourists on the island by offering them high quality mobile telephony and high bit rate data transmission services such as video downloading in streaming mode, access to electronic mail, video phone and music systems and to many other new applications.

“We are extremely proud to be the first to deploy an Alcatel-Lucent 3G network in Réunion; with it we will be able for the first time to offer our customers new high-speed user-centric services, thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s unrivalled UMTS radio access solution”, declared Pierre-Antoine Legagneur, SRR’s network technical director.

“Thanks to our long standing collaboration with SRR on mobile networks, we were able to offer a smooth evolution of the operator network from 2G to 3G. The inhabitants in Réunion Island will enjoy very soon high-speed mobile services. This new contract does not only consolidate Alcatel-Lucent’s world leadership in the field of high-speed mobile, it demonstrates that wherever a first 3G deployment is considered, Alcatel-Lucent is well-positioned to be the provider”, added Pierre Barnabé, Vice President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in France.

Under the terms of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent designs, deploys, and maintains an end-to-end 3G network including the UTRAN and its distributed Node B solution, its NGN solution consisting of the Alcatel-Lucent Wireless Call Server and Media Gateway, the intelligent network (IN) services and application platforms and the advisory and design services for wireless optimization. Alcatel-Lucent also supplies its new generation microwave transmission solution for mobile backhaul applications and to support the transport of voice and data traffic from the base stations to the core network. In addition Alcatel-Lucent is solely responsible for the maintenance of the operator’s network.

With more than 180 customers in more than 90 countries, Alcatel-Lucent is one of the leading players in the GSM/EDGE market and in third generation (3G) networks. To date, it has deployed commercial 3G systems (UMTS/HSPA and CDMA/EV-DO) for more than 70 operators worldwide.
