Unisys ClearPath Server Speeds Up Service Delivery for Belgium’s ACV/CSC

New system helps labor union transform service to 3,300 IT users

Brussels – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that its Belgian subsidiary has received a five-year extension to its contract with the Belgian Christian Trade Union Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond (ACV) / Confederation des Syndicats Chretiens (CSC).

Under the terms of the new agreement, Unisys has installed a Unisys ClearPath Libra Model 690 mainframe-class server to help the union manage costs and increase the productivity of 3,300 users in 21 local unions, 260 service centers and 12 sectorial unions across Belgium.

The new Unisys ClearPath system hosts the organization’s two main applications –calculating unemployment allowances and managing membership. Since the system’s implementation in October 2008, processing speed at ACV/CSC has already increased by 50 per cent and general levels of system reliability and availability have been further enhanced.

The Unisys ClearPath Libra Model 690 uses metering, a pay-for-use technology that allows ACV/CSC to handle dynamically changing workloads economically by providing maximum system capacity during peaks – for example, when ACV/CSC must calculate benefits at the end of each month – while minimizing costs when system usage is low. This capability allows clients such as ACV/CSC to pay for the exact amount of processing power they use, as they use it, with state-of-the-art usage monitoring.

“We chose to base our mainframe applications on the Unisys ClearPath server with metering technology to effect a short transition to the new system,” said Johan Vandewalle, IT manager at the ACV. "In return we realize a vast improvement in processing speed that has directly resulted in enhanced productivity and efficiency across our organization. We have been working with Unisys for almost 25 years and they have helped us build a full architecture -- not just our central mainframe systems but also our secure IT infrastructure, our computer network and modernization of our applications. This latest engagement extends our close partnering relationship.”

The new mainframe at ACV/CSC can operate as part of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and is easily integrated with other systems across the organization, including its Web Services. In addition to purchasing the new ClearPath server, the ACV/CSC has installed new EMC Symmetrix systems that complement the storage systems it has retained.

The Unisys ClearPath server is the linchpin in the ACV/CSC’s ongoing IT modernization, as the organization moves toward a real-time infrastructure, in which IT resources automatically handle rapid changes in business requirements while reducing costs and complexity,” said Marc Lambotte, vice president, Northern Europe Cluster, Unisys Systems and Technology. “Unisys is proud to draw on our advanced server technology and expertise in public sector solutions to help the ACV/CSC continue implementing a secure, flexible and powerful IT environment that enhances benefits to its employees and its members.”
