SANTA’S NEW HELPER, BY APPOINTMENT

SHORT of being an elf or Santa himself, Declan Austin must have the most Christmassy job in the world.

He might not work in Santa’s North Pole grotto but he does travel the country making sure that we all get the thoroughly festive Christmas that we all deserve.

Because Declan Austin is the UK’s very first Christmas Inspector.

He was even born in a village called Christmas Pie.

Santa would, most definitely, approve.

Declan works for Best Western Hotels and has just been appointed ‘Inspector Christmas’ to maintain levels of festive cheer at the company’s collection of hotels across the entire UK.

And there could surely be no-one more perfect for the job than the jovial Declan. He was raised in a place called Christmas Pie – a tiny, real life village in Surrey.

From Inverness to Lands End, Declan will be casting his festive eye over every single Best Western hotel and will be checking that there are enough twinkling fairy lights, Christmas tree decorations, and holly and mistletoe to keep everyone in a thoroughly seasonal mood.

And he simply won’t tolerate any scrooges.

Declan was promoted to Inspector Christmas for November and December from his year-round role as director of operations. Ideal for the job, Declan starts to plan his own Christmas decorations in July and ensures his house is covered in lights – inside and outside.

To measure the level of Christmas spirit, Best Western has introduced a Christmas star system to award hotels with a bronze, silver or gold star to reward the most Christmassy hotels. Declan designed the system so his team of helpers would be able to take instant action on all hotels not up to scratch.

Declan’s ‘sleigh’ will be stocked with ‘spare’ festive spirit too. He’s travelling with 500m of fairy lights, 10 sacks full of baubles and plenty of sparkle and merriness.

Declan and his team of helpers will visit all the 280 hotels in the group during November and December to ensure they are perfect by Christmas day.

Declan said: “If you are going away at Christmas, you want to know you are staying somewhere that really gets into the Christmas spirit. I am a passionate believer that Christmas is the best time of year and we want all our hotels to reflect the best welcome possible.

“In my day to day role as director of operations I meet many of the hotel staff and ensure that everything runs smoothly. I use these skills for my special job during December where all hotels are visited to ensure that every hotel is one that Santa would be proud to visit.”
